Need Some Fun Ideas for the Weekend? We’ve Got You Covered!

At Thompson Sells, we know how important it is to get out of the house, spend time with family and friends, and have some fun! We also love our neighborhood and everything it has to offer. To celebrate Family Day, we’re kicking off a weekly series of posts to let you know about all the fun things to do in Etobicoke each weekend.

Even though Spring is around the corner, we can still make the most of our last Winter holiday. Whether you want to get outside or stay in the warm, there are plenty of fun things to do in Etobicoke and the surrounding area this Family Day weekend. Let’s get started!

1. Family Day at Montgomery’s Inn

When: Monday, February 20th, 1pm – 5pm

Where: Montgomery’s Inn Community Museum, 4709 Dundas St W, Etobicoke, ON M9A 1A8

Cost: $3 – $7

Montgomery’s Inn Community Museum represents a beautiful piece of history in the heart of Etobicoke. Built around 1830 for Irishman Thomas Mongomery, the inn served as a community meeting place and provided food and shelter for travelers. Today it runs as a museum and holds events throughout the year. This Family Day you can come and enjoy a whole list of Irish and Canadian-themed activities, including learning to play the spoons and a traditional Irish Ceilidh.

2. Old Mill Groove Nights

When: Saturday, February 18th, 6pm

Where: Old Mill, 21 Old Mill Road, Toronto, Ontario, M8X 1G5

Cost: $15

If you’re in the mood to get your groove on this Saturday, you can head on over to Old Mill. Enjoy dinner before moving and shaking to tunes spun out by their master DJ. He’ll play greatest hits spanning all genres, so there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to book ahead!

3. Old Mill Family Day Brunch

When: Monday, February 20th, 11am – 1:30pm

Where: Old Mill, 21 Old Mill Road, Toronto, Ontario, M8X 1G5

Cost: $19.95 – $39.95

If brunch is more your thing, you can gather the family on Monday for their special Family Day brunch. This isn’t your average brunch fare and you can expect carved roast beef, baked bone-in ham, seafood specialties, and lots more.

4. Mississauga Living Arts Centre Family Day Activities

When: Monday, February 20th, 11am – 3pm

Where: Mississauga Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Drive, Mississauga, ON L5B 4B8

If you’re happy to venture just outside of Etobicoke to neighboring Mississauga, there is tons of fun to be had at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre. They’re hosting their huge annual Family Day celebration packed with activities for all the family. There’ll be stage performances, storytelling, ice carving demonstrations, face painting, dance and pottery workshops, marshmallow roasting, and even a family talent show!

5. Free Skate in Celebration Square

When: Monday, February 20th, 12pm – 4pm

Where: Mississauga Celebration Square, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, ON L5B 3C1

You can get even more out your trip by stopping by Celebration Square for a free skating session. Lace up your skates, grab your toque and mitts, and get on the ice!

6. Colonel Sam Smith Park Skating Trail

When: Daily

Where: Colonel Sam Smith Park, 3145 Lake Shore Boulevard West, Etobicoke, ON M8V 1L4

If you’d rather skate closer to home, you can head to Colonel Sam Smith Park skating trail. This figure-eight skating trail is located in a designated Toronto Bird Sanctuary, so you can enjoy nature while you skate. Just be sure to check out the public skate times before you go. If theirs don’t suit, you might want to take a look at what’s happening in Rennie Park instead.

7. Public Skate in Centennial Park Arena

When: Sunday, February 19th, 12:45pm – 2:15pm and Monday, February 20th, 10am – 12:30pm

Where: Centennial Park Arena, 156 Centennial Park Rd, Etobicoke, ON M9C 5N3

If you’d prefer to be skating indoors, Centennial Park Arena is your go-to. This double-padded arena located in Centennial Park has public skates happening on both Sunday and Monday this Family Day weekend.

8. Cards at Franklin Horner Community Centre

When: Most days

Where: Franklin Horner Community Centre, 432 Horner Avenue, Etobicoke, Ontario M8W 2B2

Cost: $3 – $4

Franklin Horner Community Centre is a not-for-profit community center for people of all ages serving southern Etobicoke and surrounding areas. Various programs run from the center throughout the week, including almost daily card playing sessions.

9. Syrian Film Night – A Refugee Sponsorship Fundraiser

Where: The Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M6R 2M9

Cost: $25

This event gives you the opportunity to support another family on Family Day. The Heintzman Refugee Committee is hosting a screening of two Syrian films at The Revue not-for-profit community cinema. The funds raised will go towards providing basic necessities for a Syrian family’s first year in Canada.

10. First Signs of Spring Walking Tour High Park

Where: The Grenadier Restaurant, 180 Parkside Drive, Toronto, ON M6S 2X5 (Benches across from Grenadier Restaurant)

What better way to spend a Sunday morning than enjoying the sights and sounds of nature and learning about High Park’s most interesting features. These walking tours are suitable for all ages and are held twice a month. They’re led by volunteer scientists, historians, and local naturalists, this week’s walk being led by Bob Kortright.
