Thinking of Moving Rural? Here are a Few Things to Consider First!

This year, we have seen many clients relocating out of the city. For families that have considered a simpler, more affordable lifestyle, many decided 2021 was the year to take action.  We have seen our clients leave Toronto for greater horizons – Barrie, Midhurst, Tiny Township, Grimsby Orillia, and more. Here are some of the things that attracted them to move away from the hustle and bustle, and a few of the surprises that they’ve encountered since relocating:

What’s the Attraction?

Simpler Lifestyle – There’s no doubt that more remote areas come with a simpler lifestyle, void of rush hour traffic, and a slower pace of life.

Safer Communities – In small towns, neighbours move less frequently, they know who lives on their street and look out for one another.  Street gangs and much of the violence we see in the city is significantly less frequent in small towns.

Cleaner Air – As you enter a rural community you’ll immediately notice less congestion, more trees, nature and much cleaner air.

Closer to nature & outdoor activities – Lakes, beaches, trails and parks are typically close by, meaning there are an abundance of outdoor activities at your doorstep.

Bigger homes and lots –Homes are bigger and less expensive than in the city. You may be able to finally upgrade from your Toronto condo to a detached home, or choose to live mortgage free with the same quality of house that you had in the city.

It’s Important to Consider the Cons!

More Maintenance  – Bigger lots come with bigger lawns to mow, more to clean up come the spring and fall, lots of snow to plough, and frequent visits from geese, minks, big bugs, mice, foxes, deer and likely a few unrecognizable visitors.

You Need to Drive to Everything – Keep in mind, UBER doesn’t operate in many small communities and taxis are few and far between. You will most likely need to drive your car for almost all outings.

Fewer Amenities – Say goodbye to many conveniences we’ve come accustomed to in the city – groceries at your doorstep, delivery from your favourite local pizza joint, quick arrivals for online purchases, and a huge selection of great restaurants, and entertainment. These conveniences are pretty much non-existent in most rural communities.

Services More Limited – If you’re planning on keeping your city job and working remotely, make sure your rural area has the internet to support your business needs like ZOOM calls and daily emails. This isn’t a given in all communities. Many rural areas also don’t have natural gas so you may encounter high utility costs with propane and electricity.

More Severe Weather – Longer Winters – In many northern communities, winters are longer and more severe, with many places seeing an entire extra month of cold and snow tacked onto their winter season. If you’re not in love with winter, you may want to consider this.
